| Hays,
Kansas
Hays,
Kansas is a vital, thriving city found in
the lovely Smoky
Hill River Valley of Ellis
County. Hays serves as the county seat
and is the cultural, commercial and educational
hub for the region, as well as for most of
Western Kansas.
Hays
was settled after the end of the Civil
War, when the military constructed Fort Hays
to protect the railroad from Indians. It
began as a group of saloons and dance
halls, full of wild and violent men. Wild
Bill Hickock was the town sheriff for a few
months. Hays was noted in the writings of
General Custer?s wife in 1869, just a few
years after settlement, when 36 graves had been
filled in the famous Boot
Hill cemetery. Calamity Jane and
Buffalo Bill Cody were residents here. As
the ?Wild West? tamed down, Hays saw the
arrival of numerous immigrants, including Volga
Germans from Russia. They built a number
of lovely churches
and cathedrals that are still in use today.
From
its colorful and often brutal beginnings, Hays
has evolved into a fine, upstanding community.
Today it claims one of the lowest crime rates in
all of Kansas.
The Census 2000 recorded the population at just
over 20,000. Hays residents enjoy some of
the finest medical care available. The
Center for Health Improvement and Hays
Medical Center provide top-notch services
and state of the art technology. The city
boasts an outstanding school system, and higher
education can be found at Fort
Hays State University and the North Central
Technical College.
Hays,
KS has much to offer in way of culture and
entertainment. The Sternberg
Museum of Natural History draws visitors
from as far off as Denver
and Kansas
City with its unique exhibits of prehistoric
life. Thirteen art galleries grace the
downtown area, and the Hays
Symphony Orchestra is a delight.
Frontier history can be explored at the Ellis
County Historical Museum and Fort
Hays. The city of Hays? rich heritage is
preserved at the Center for Ethnic Studies.
The community celebrates their past during Oktoberfest
and German Heritage Days. The Wild
West Festival held each summer draws
people from all over to enjoy the fun.
From
its grim beginnings as a Wild West
gunslinger?s town, Hayes,
Kansas has blossomed and grown into a splendid,
solid community with a marvelous quality of
life. As the largest city in the region,
it looks forward to much future growth.
