Crestor (rosuvastatin) is one of six cholesterol lowering "statin" medications approved by the FDA in 2003 to treat high-cholesterol.

It has been found that patients with under-active thyroids or kidney problems are at increased risk for a breakdown of muscle fibers (rhabdomolysis) when they use Crestor. Rhabdomolysis frequently results in kidney damage and can be fatal. Another statin drug, cerivastatin (Baycol), has already been removed from the market because of reports of rhabdomyolysis and fatalities. Research has indicated that Crestor is the only remaining medication in the statin family to cause elevated urine protein, a potential warning sign of serious kidney problems.

AstraZeneneca had delayed their application for FDA approval and halted clinical trials worldwide due to reports of kidney damage and muscle weakness. Less than a year after the FDA approved Crestor, a Public Health Advisory was issued regarding the drug.
